Designing a visual identity for geobiology
A conference identity for the D-A-CH Geobiology Symposium 2024, held at the University of Bayreuth’s Iwalewahaus on 30 September–1 October 2024.
The early-career symposium brought researchers together at the intersection of geoscience and biology. Conference information ↗
01 / THE IDEA
Where biology meets the mineral world
Geobiology connects processes operating at very different scales: microorganisms, molecules, minerals, water and entire landscapes. The logo gathers those scales into a circular field, with microbial forms and chemical structures surrounding a crystalline geological centre.
Above and below the waterline, the composition suggests exchange between living systems and the physical environment rather than treating them as separate subjects.
02 / IDENTITY SYSTEM
Built to extend beyond the mark
The circular emblem became the anchor for a broader black-and-white conference language. A narrow display typeface, strong rules and small scientific motifs carried the identity into programme pages, invited-speaker layouts and abstract templates.
Keeping the system monochrome allowed dense scientific information to remain legible while preserving a distinctive, hand-drawn character.
03 / THE RESULT
A scientific identity with room for information
The result works as a recognisable conference badge and as a flexible framework for practical communication. Illustration establishes the theme; typography and layout organize the programme around it.
This case study presents the identity in the form originally designed and delivered.
